West Bank
<<occupied territory>>
This area of 5640 sq km (with an additional 220 sq km of water being the NW quarter of the Dead Sea) to the west of the Jordan River, is often referred to as an occupied territory. Since it was captured during the 1967 Six-day war, most of the West Bank (excluding East Jerusalem) remains under Israeli Military control, with the Palestinian Authority administering the remainder. It is enclosed by a 700 km exclusion/protection barrier, part of which is a concrete wall up to 8m high. This is in an effort to prevent terrorist attacks against Israel by radical Palestinians inside the zone. About 20% of the population living in this area are Jews, the remainder Palestinians.
