Vulnerable

<<susceptible to attack>>

This is being exposed to the possibility of being taken advantage of and harmed physically, emotionally or spiritually. Personal strengths and weaknesses can both result in vulnerability. When we just look at the natural factors and do not take into account God’s resources we are vulnerable to defeat and negativity. If we are functioning outside His will, walking in disobedience and sin or putting undue confidence ‘in the flesh’ we are also at risk (Num 13:17-33, 14:41-45; Josh 7:10-13; Jer 17:7).

The storms of life expose how defenceless we are (Mt 7:26,27). Inadequate protection and a lack of robust foundations can lead to damage or destruction. Defensive walls and substantial gates usually surrounded the OT cities as protection against enemy forces. They provided resistance unless broken down or breached (Josh 6:1; Neh 1:3). Continually monitor your own defences. Seek the safety and protection of the Christian community (Heb 10:25). Be in relationship and accountable to others, have them pray for you, put on the armour of God and pray in the Holy Spirit. Don’t think you can be a lone-star-ranger, a ‘God and me only’ syndrome, as one of Satan’s strategies is to isolate believers from other Christians looking for the moment his victim is least prepared for an attack (1 Pet 5:8,9).  Being ignorant of Scripture also makes people vulnerable to deception (Eph 4:14).

We are also vulnerable when we have not dealt with weaknesses of character or past negative experiences, are overly tired and hungry, discouraged, sick, feeling alone or emotionally exhausted.

We must ensure that we maintain our spiritual wholeness and not slip into complacency. As our lives are increasingly cleansed by the Lord we must ensure that He is allowed to take up residence there or else we will be subject to increased spiritual attack (Mt 24:43-45). Be disciplined in your lifestyle, living in humble dependence upon the Lord and being obedient to His commands. The Bible cautions, beware if you think you are standing firm that you don’t fall, rather be strong in the Lord (1 Cor 10:12; Eph 6:10; 2 Pet 3:17). The Bible's message is, "Guard your heart more than any treasure as it directs your whole life" (Prov 4:23).

Be on your guard at all times against Satan’s attacks – his aim is to use the pull of the flesh, the sinful appetites of humanity, to get us to yield to sin (Rom 7:14-35). We are told not to give any place to the devil (Eph 4:27). Don’t give him an opportunity to harass – he

Satan will attack, be on guard

doesn’t decline any invitations! What areas of my life are exposed to assault from Satan? Are there predictable times and situations in my life when my character defects are attacked? Samson, through the nagging of deceptive Delilah, let his guard down revealing the secret of his strength (Jdg 16:15-19). What wears away at my resolve to stand firm?

While vulnerability is often dangerous at other times it can be useful. When, through our choice, we truly open ourselves up to others with honesty and humility, we have no control over the outcome, yet it is a measure of our inner strength to put ourselves in that position and may be beneficial to them. As we disclose our past struggles we can share how we overcame them or, if they are current issues, how we are dealing with them. Sharing empathetically can be an encouragement to others and is empowering for us, strengthening our resolve to live for Him.

Leaders are prone to attack so we need to pray especially for their protection for if the shepherd is ‘taken out’ the flock will be scattered and decimated (Zech 13:7; Mt 9:36, 26:31). Widows and others that can’t defend themselves or their possessions are not to be taken advantage of (Ex 22:22; Deut 24:14; Isa 10:1,2; Jas 1:27). People are prone to sin, but woe to those who influence or cause them to fall (Mt 18:6; Lk 17:1; 1 Cor 8:9-13).

Do I have an intimate, personal relationship with God, based on His Word along with my own history of faith building experiences, rather than my changeable feelings? Choose to be under the covering of the blood of Christ, by walking closely with Him and under Godly authority. It is too dangerous to put yourself in the line of fire. Don’t look at temptation’s power, instead put your confidence in God, align yourself with Christ’s victory and keep your eyes on Him (Heb 12:2).
